Imre Varga (Judoka)

Imre Varga (born August 19, 1945 in Nagyszénás , † September 18, 2011 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian judoka . He won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1979 and won two silver and three bronze medals at European Championships.

Career

The 1.88 m tall Imre Varga from Budapesti Spartacus SC competed in the light heavyweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He was eliminated in his opening fight by referee decision (yusei-gachi) against the Canadian Terry Farnsworth .

From 1974 Varga fought in the heavyweight division or in the open class. At the European Championships in 1974 he won a bronze medal in the open class. At the 1975 World Championships in Vienna, Varga was eliminated from the heavyweight division in the first round against the Japanese Chōnosuke Takagi . Two days later in the open class he defeated Wolfgang Zuckschwerdt from the GDR in the quarter-finals . After his semi-final defeat against the Japanese Haruki Uemura , Varga also lost the battle for a bronze medal against Schota Tschotschischwili from the Soviet Union. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Varga competed in the open class. In his first fight he defeated Dietmar Lorenz by a referee decision. In the second round he was eliminated by a small rating (yuko) against the South Korean Cho Jea-ki .

In 1978 Imre Varga won two medals at the European Championships in Helsinki . In the heavyweight division he reached the final with a victory over Sergei Novikow from the Soviet Union and won the silver medal behind the Dutchman Peter Adelaar . In the open class, Varga won a bronze medal. A year later at the European Championships in Brussels in 1979, he was defeated in the heavyweight semifinals to the French Jean-Luc Rougé , but received a bronze medal. The 1979 World Championships took place in Paris at the beginning of December . Varga lost in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight division to the Japanese Yasuhiro Yamashita . In the battle for a bronze medal, Varga defeated Alexey Tyurin from the Soviet Union. The two faced each other in May 1980 in the heavyweight final at the European Championships in Vienna , Tyurin won and Varga received the silver medal. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Varga competed in the heavyweight division. He defeated Saed Farhad from Kuwait through Ippon in his opening fight . In the quarterfinals he was defeated by the North Korean Kim Myong-gyu by a penalty (chui).
