Peter Adelaar (born February 26, 1947 in Amsterdam ; † October 14, 2004 there ) was a Dutch judoka . He was European champion in 1978 and also won five bronze medals at European championships.

Career

Peter Adelaar, who is 2.13 meters tall, came into focus in 1973 after Willem Ruska resigned . At the European Championships in 1973 in Madrid, he lost the heavyweight division of the Spaniard Santiago Ojeda , but won the battle for bronze against Giwi Onashvili from the Soviet Union. Adelaar's bronze medal was the only medal for the Netherlands at these championships. A month later at the 1973 World Championships in Lausanne, he dropped out of the open class against Dietmar Lorenz from the GDR. In the heavyweight division, he reached the semi-finals with a victory over Frenchman François Besson . After defeats against Sergei Novikow from the Soviet Union in the semi-finals and against the Briton Keith Remfry in the battle for bronze, Adelaar finished fifth. In 1974 Adelaar won the Dutch heavyweight and open class championship titles. In 1975 at the European Championships in Lyon, he won a bronze medal in the open class.

Two years later at the European Championships in Ludwigshafen in 1977 , Adelaar won bronze in the heavyweight division behind the French Jean-Luc Rougé and Jibilo Nischaradse from the Soviet Union. In 1978 at the European Championships in Helsinki Adelaar defeated Jean-Luc Rougé in the heavyweight semi-finals and the Hungarian Imre Varga in the final . At the Dutch championships in 1978 Adelaar won the open class and finished second in the heavyweight division behind Wil Peters . At the European Championships in Brussels in 1979 , Adelaar won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division after losing to Vitaly Kuznetsov from the Soviet Union in the semi-finals . In 1979 and 1980 Adelaar won the Dutch heavyweight championships. At the European Championships in Vienna in 1980 , Adelaar again won bronze in the heavyweight division, it was his sixth and last medal at the European Championships. Two and a half months later, the 1980 Olympic Games took place in Moscow . Adelaar lost in his first heavyweight fight to Vladimir Kocman from Czechoslovakia. Six days later, his only fight in the open class against the Brit Arthur Mapp lasted 2:08 minutes. In 1981 Adelaar won his sixth Dutch championship title in the heavyweight division.
