Arthur Mapp

Arthur Mapp (born November 6, 1953 in British Honduras , now Belize ) is a former British judoka who won an Olympic bronze medal in the open class in 1980.

Athletic career

The 1.84 m tall Mapp fought in the light heavyweight, heavyweight and open classes. In 1978 he won the British Heavyweight Open. At the European Championships in 1979 he won his first fight in the heavyweight division, but then retired against the Hungarian Imre Varga . At the 1979 World Championships , he won his opening match in the open class and was eliminated against the Yugoslav Radomir Kovačević .

At the Olympic Games in Moscow he started in the open class. He defeated the Dutchman Peter Adelaar in his opening match and John Anthony De Wet from Zimbabwe in the round of 16 . In the quarterfinals, Mapp won against the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow , who had won silver in the heavyweight division. In the semifinals, Mapp was defeated by the GDR judoka Dietmar Lorenz after 39 seconds. Mapp won the battle for the bronze medal against the Mongolian Dambajan Tsend-Ayush .

In 1981 Mapp won the British championships in the open class. At the World Championships , he went to the light heavyweight division and was eliminated in the first round.
