Dimitar Sapryanov

Dimitar Saprjanow ( Bulgarian Димитър Запрянов ; born January 27, 1960 in Opan , Stara Sagora Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian judoka . He competed in the heavyweight and open classes.

Sapryanov was third in 1979 at the Junior European Championships. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he reached the heavyweight final against Frenchman Angelo Parisi and received the silver medal. In the open class he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Arthur Mapp from England . Also at the European Championships in 1981 Sapryanov reached the final in the heavyweight division and was defeated there against the Soviet judoka Grigory Weritschew . Two years later, Sapryanov lost in the heavyweight finals of the European Championships in 1983 against Yabil Biktashev from the Soviet Union. 1984 in Liège , Sapryanov finished fifth in the heavyweight division.

At the 1985 World Championships, Sapryanov lost to the South Korean Cho Yong-chul in the quarterfinals , but then fought his way to the bronze medal. 1986 Sapryanov received the bronze medal in the open class at the Goodwill Games in Moscow. At the 1987 World Championships , he finished fifth in the heavyweight division. He won his last international medal at the European Championships in 1988 with bronze in the heavyweight division. At the end of his career, he finished fifth at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . After he had lost in the second round to the Japanese Hitoshi Saitō , he fought his way through the hope round to the duel for bronze, but lost this fight against Cho Yong-chul.
