Robert Quarry

Robert Walter Quarry (born November 3, 1925 in Santa Rosa , California - † February 20, 2009 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles ) was an American actor .

Life

Quarry grew up the son of a doctor and was drawn to acting by his grandmother. He left school at the age of 14 and initially worked for radio , but then received a scholarship at the Pasadena Playhouse . There Alfred Hitchcock became aware of him and so Quarry had his feature film debut in 1943 in In the Shadow of Doubt , albeit in a minor supporting role.

In November 1943 Quarry joined the United States Army , but continued his film career after the war with a contract with RKO Pictures . Shortly thereafter, he switched to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , where he met Katharine Hepburn and taught her to play tennis . At her side he also made his Broadway debut in 1950 as Silvius in a production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It . In the following year he was with The Taming of the Shrew in another Shakespeare production on the Broadway stage, here he played Lucentio . During his time at MGM, he received supporting roles in, among others, Meeting Point Hong Kong , A Kiss Before Death and Indianapolis ; however, he has also appeared in guest roles on numerous television series, including The Lone Ranger , Perry Mason , Underwater Adventures and 77 Sunset Strip .

In the 1970s Quarry appeared as main characters in a series of low-budget - horror films from American International Pictures and was the successor of Vincent Price traded comparable fame but he never won. Among other things, The Return of Dr. Phibes and the blaxploitation film The Black Zombies of Sugar Hill . In 1980 he was hit by a truck whose driver was not insured. The treatment costs that he himself had to bear ruined him financially. Later he was also the victim of a robbery in which he suffered serious injuries, after which he retired completely for several years.

The direct-to-video director Fred Olen Ray succeeded in the mid-1980s to persuade Quarry to return to the film; Between 1987 and 1999 he appeared in 26 B-Movies Rays and acted alongside Britt Ekland , David Carradine , Jan-Michael Vincent and Telly Savalas, among others . The films made included action films such as Commando Squad , horror and science fiction films , and even a western with The Shooter .

In addition to acting, Quarry was also an avid chef, in 1989 he published a cookbook called Simply Wonderful Recipes for Wonderfully Simple Foods . In his final years he suffered from heart problems, he died at the age of 83 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills.
