Cho Yong-chul (born May 7, 1961 ) is a former South Korean judoka . He won two Olympic medals and was world champion in 1985.

Career

The 1.80 m tall Cho Yong-chul fought in the heavyweight division or in the open class.

At the 1981 World Championships in Maastricht, Cho defeated French Angelo Parisi in the heavyweight division's round of 16 and Egyptian Mohamed Ali Rashwan in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Japanese Yasuhiro Yamashita . In the hope round he lost to the Finn Juha Salonen and finished fifth. In 1982 the Korean won a bronze medal at the student world championships. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , Cho won his first fight over Britain's Elvis Gordon and then lost to Angelo Parisi. In the hope round he defeated the Egyptian Sherif El-Digwy and in the fight for the bronze medal Douglas Nelson from the United States. At the end of 1984 Cho lost to the Japanese Naoki Takiyoshi in the final of the Student World Championships .

The 1985 World Championships were held in the South Korean capital, Seoul. Cho defeated Elvis Gordon in the second round and the Bulgarian Dimitar Saprjanow in the quarterfinals . After his semi-final victory over the French Laurent Del Colombo , he met the Japanese Olympic champion from 1984 Hitoshi Saitō in the final and won this fight. After Ahn Byeong-keun's lightweight victory , Cho's success was the hosts' second gold medal. The following year, Cho competed in the open class of the 1986 Asian Games, also held in Seoul, and was defeated by the Japanese Yoshimi Masaki in the final . Cho's last major tournament was also held in Seoul. At the 1988 Olympic Games , Cho won his first three fights against the German Alexander von der Groeben , the Italian Stefano Venturelli and the Polish Andrzej Basik . After his semi-final defeat by Hitoshi Saitō Cho won his second Olympic bronze medal with a victory over Dimitar Sapryanov.
