Giwi Onashvili (born July 27, 1947 in Patardseuli , Kakheti , Georgian SSR ) is a former Soviet judoka who competed in the heavyweight division in the 1970s. He won an Olympic bronze medal and two European titles.

Athletic career

The 1.92 m tall athlete from Kolmeurne Tbilisi lost at the European Judo Championships in 1969 in Ostend in the final against Willem Ruska from the Netherlands . At the 1969 World Championships in Mexico City , he lost to West German Klaus Glahn and received the bronze medal. In 1970 Onashvili won the European team championship with the Soviet team against the Dutch team. In 1971 Onashvili won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Gothenburg. In 1972 he reached the European Championship final in Voorburg, but lost it to Ruska. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Onashvili defeated the Japanese Motoki Nishimura in the quarterfinals and lost the semifinals against Klaus Glahn. Ruska won the final against Glahn, Onaschwili and Nishimura received the bronze medals. 1974 Onashvili won the heavyweight final of the European Championships in London against the Dutchman Chris Dolman , in 1975 he won in Lyon in the final of the open class against his compatriot Schota Tschotschischwili . In 1976 he was defeated at the European Championships in Kiev in the final against his compatriot Sergei Novikow .

In 1970 Onashvili was the Soviet heavyweight champion in sambo , in 1973 in judo.
