The North Dam is an earth dam near the city of Grand Coulee in Grant County in the US state of Washington . Construction of the dam began in 1946 and was completed in 1951. Together with the Dry Falls Dam , located about 22 mi (35 km) southeast, the North Dam creates Banks Lake in the historic river bed of the Columbia River , the Grand Coulee . The lake serves as a compensation basin for the Columbia Basin Project . Near the left end of the North Dam is the inlet from the project's feeder canal. The canal serves either as a water supplier for the pumped storage plant at Grand Coulee Dam or for the backflow into Banks Lake from the same pumped storage plant.

The North Dam, located near the town of Grand Coulee, has a maximum height of 145 ft (44 m) and a crown length of 1,400 ft (427 m). The geographic height of both dams is 1,580 ft (482 m), and the maximum water table height of Banks Lake is 1,570 ft (479 m). Both North Dam and Dry Falls Dam have a freeboard of about three meters to protect against the waves breaking up in strong winds.
