The Netherlands took part in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal with a delegation of 108 athletes (72 men and 36 women) in 58 competitions in eleven sports. A gold medal could not be won, but the cyclist Herman Ponsteen and the marksman Eric Swinkels secured silver. The swimmer Enith Brigitha won bronze twice, the water polo team also came third. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was André Bolhuis , who took fourth place with the hockey team.
