Rie Mastenbroek, third most successful female athlete at the 1936 Olympic Games
The Netherlands took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin with a delegation of 129 athletes. With a total of 17 medals, including six gold medals, the Netherlands took ninth place in the medal table.
The most successful athlete was the swimmer Hendrika Mastenbroek with three gold and one silver medal. It was also number 3 on the list of the most successful participants, behind Jesse Owens (USA) and Konrad Frey (German Empire).
The youngest participant was the swimmer Truus Kerkmeester at the age of 14, the oldest participant of the rider Gerard Le Heux at the age of 51.
Boycott efforts
The 1936 Summer Olympics were planned as an act of propaganda for the German Reich . The Netherlands, like the United States , France and England, was one of the nations that wanted to boycott the Games against the backdrop of the Nuremberg Race Laws and the establishment of the first concentration camps . For this purpose, the Comité international pour le respect de l'esprit olympique was founded, which in addition to the aforementioned countries also consisted of some Scandinavian countries and Czechoslovakia . Ultimately, however, the critics could not prevail.
