British India took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin with a delegation of 27 athletes in four sports. With the gold medal they won, theyfinished 20th in the medaltable together with New Zealand .

At the opening ceremony, hockey player Dhyan Chand carried the flag in the stadium and he and the hockey team won the gold medal. The youngest Indian participant was 19 year old Peter Paul Fernandez and the oldest was 35 year old Cyril Michie . Both belonged to the hockey team that won the gold medal.

For the fifth time the hockey competition was held and for the third time behind India could win the gold medal. With Dhyan Chand and Richard Allen there were two players who became Olympic champions in 1928 and 1932. Carlyle Carrol Tapsell , Roop Singh Bais and Sayed Muhammad Jaffar became Olympic champions in 1932. The Indian team won the Olympic gold superiorly. The bad result was the 4-0 win against Hungary in the preliminary round and the team conceded their first and only goal in the final against the German Empire.

British India took part in freestyle wrestling competitions with three athletes. Rashid Anwar started in welterweight, Karam Rasul in middleweight and Shankarrao Thorat in bantamweight.
