India was represented at the Olympic Games for the 22nd timewith its participation in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . For the first time since 1928, the men's hockey team was not part of the Olympic hockey tournament due to a lack of qualifications.
The first gold medal for India in a single event was won by the air rifle marksman Abhinav Bindra . With a total of three medals, these games were the most successful for the country.
