In 2008 Argentina took partin the Summer Olympics forthe 22nd time. 138 athletes from the country qualified for the Games in 19 different sports. Of these, 132 athletes took part in the games.

Manu Ginóbili carried the flag of Argentina at the opening ceremony .

The Argentine men's basketball team qualified by finishing second at the 2007 American Basketball Championship and is taking part in the Olympic basketball tournament as defending champions for the fifth time.

With a fourth place in the American basketball championship, the Argentine women's basketball team was allowed to take part in a qualifying tournament, where it was eliminated in the preliminary round and thus did not start at the Olympic tournament.

Sergio Batista announced his roster for the July 3rd Olympics. Subsequently, the midfielder Nicolás Burdisso was exchanged for Nicolás Pareja, as Burdisso's club did not give clearance for the Olympic Games.
