With its participation in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, South Africa was represented at the Olympic Games for the 17th time. The first participation was in 1904. The South African team consists of 136 athletes. The flag bearer at the Olympic opening ceremony was the swimmer Natalie du Toit . The South African flag was carried by Sifiso Nhlapo at the closing ceremony . The only medal winner was the long jumper Godfrey Khotso Mokoena , who could win a silver medal.
