Johannes Dreyer

Johannes Dreyer, also Johann Dreger, Dreiger, Dreier (* around 1500 in Bega ; † 1544 in Minden ) was a Lutheran theologian and is considered the reformer of the imperial city of Herford .

Live and act

Dreyer's father was a councilor in Bega, his uncle Hermann was promoted to the Augustinian order and was provincial of the Saxon order province several times. When and where Dreyer entered the order is unknown. It is reported that Gerhard Hecker , who had been in the Augustinian monastery in Osnabrück since 1521 , was his teacher. He obtained the degree of doctor of theology as a member of the order. However, it is not known where the doctorate took place.

Dreier had already turned to Martin Luther's teaching in the decisive years of the Reformation, but did not come out publicly until 1524. The entire Herford convent and the Herford fraternity had committed to Luther at an early stage.

Dreyer and Lang are said to have been in Wittenberg and Braunschweig together . When the city wanted him to be a preacher, he refused, but dedicated his book Eine korte underwysynge yn des hylgen Worde Goddes (1528) to the Braunschweig residents . This remarkable book gives an impression of the biblical- dogmatic preaching style of the time .

He left the Herford convent in 1530, a few years before it was dissolved. When the city opened up to the Reformation , Dreyer became the first Lutheran preacher at Herford Minster in 1532 and wrote the ordinance of the Ordinantie kerken ampte of the Erliken city of Herford. Their implementation was by objection of Duke Johann III. Postponed by Kleve and by tensions with Luther because of the intended closure of the Fraterhaus. Dreyer's church ordinance was read out on April 7, 1532, but was not printed until 1534 in Wittenberg (with a preface by Johannes Bugenhagen , whose Brunswick church ordinance of 1528 was based on Dreyer's work).

The Augustinian convent in Herford dissolved in 1532 (according to other sources in 1540) and gave its house to the city for the establishment of a school. Dreyer stayed in Herford until 1540. Since the city held him too short, he went to Minden , where it was hardly better: there, too, he met the city with ingratitude. Tensions and struggles shortened his life.
