Georgia took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing for the fourth time as an independent nation in the Summer Olympics. The Georgian Olympic Committee nominated a total of 35 athletes and was represented in eleven sports.

Shortly after the opening ceremony on August 9, 2008, the Caucasus conflict between Georgia and Russia began, so that at times even a withdrawal was considered. At the shooting competition in the women's air pistol over 10 meters, Georgian Nino Salukwadze won bronze and Russian Natalja Paderina won silver. As a sign of Olympic peace, the two of them hugged each other at the award ceremony. In the women's beach volleyball game, too, the players of the Georgian and Russian teams hugged each other during the preliminary round of Group C.
