qualification

The following qualification criteria applied to both women and men: A maximum of two participants per NOK were eligible to start, provided that both were among the top eight at the 2007 World Cup in Patras . One starting place each went to NOKs, of which at least one athlete was among the top 13 at the World Championships, but not a second among the top eight. Another starting place was awarded to the host nation China and the best athletes from a possibly missing continent. If China or at least four continents already provided an individual starter based on the World Cup placement, the next-placed NOK of the World Cup, from which none of the athletes had qualified yet, were filled. The 16th and last starting place was awarded by wildcard .
