Life
Philippson was born the son of the Jewish writer, publisher and teacher Moses Philippson . His mother was Marianne Levy-Wust . After the untimely death of his impoverished father, Philippson took care of the education of his younger brother, born in 1811, who later became known rabbi, publicist and writer Ludwig Philippson .
A loan from the Jewish community in the city of Dessau enabled Phöbus Philippson to study medicine in Halle (Saale) , where he also brought his brother. His younger brother's first works appeared under the older one.
Phöbus Moses Philippson practiced as a doctor in Magdeburg from 1829 , later in Klötze .
In 1832 he married his cousin Sara Gottschalk . After her death in 1849 he married her sister Pauline . Philippson had many children, four of whom reached adulthood.
He published some medical papers. Two dealt with cholera and its history. Philippson also wrote short stories . In his biographical sketches , which appeared in three parts in Leipzig between 1864 and 1866, he dealt with the work of his father and two teachers from his time in Dessau. He also re-translated parts of the Old Testament into German.
