Jason Nicholas Burnett (born December 16, 1986 in Etobicoke , Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian trampoline gymnast who took part in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Life & Career

Start of career and first successes as an adult

Burnett was born in 1986 in Toronto's western Etobicoke neighborhood , but grew up in the village of Nobleton , just north of his birthplace. At the age of ten he discovered trampoline gymnastics for himself and from then on trained in this sport at club level at Airborne Trampoline , which has a total of four different branches around Toronto. At the age of 14, the young Canadian took part in various national and international competitions and was able to record his first successes. From this time on he toured through different countries and continents and from then on was also able to record initial successes in the adult sector. He made his first notable appearances in 2003 at the Trampoline Canada Cup , where he achieved a 26th place in individual jumping and a second place in synchronized jumping. In the same year he took part in trampoline gymnastics at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Saskatoon , where he already took fourth place in individual jumping and barely missed a podium place. Furthermore, he took part in the 3rd Team Trials in Longueuil in 2003 , where he came third in the individual jumping and in the same year he took part in the 2003 World Championships in Hanover . There he could not really convince with a 34th place in the individual and a 28th place in synchronized jumping and could therefore not follow the successes of the Canadian women (e.g. Karen Cockburn or Heather Ross-McManus ) in this competition.

2004 to 2005

In 2004 he again took part in the Trampoline Canada Cup , this time held in Canada's fourth largest city, Calgary . Compared to the previous year, Burnett's performance improved considerably, but it did not result in more than twelfth place. At the World Cup in 2004 in Upplands Väsby in Sweden , he reached Canadians a 15th place in the individual and a tenth place in the synchronized competition. In the same year he reached similar placements at the World Cup / Dobrovolsky Cup in Moscow (14th place in individual, 15th place in synchronous). At the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Toronto he finally reached a podium again, where he reached a third place in synchronized jumping and a 15th place in individual competition. A year earlier in Hanover, still in the back places, at the World Cup in Savognin , Switzerland, it was already enough for two top twelve placements (tenth place in individual, eleventh place in synchronous). In addition, Jason Burnett took part in the Pan American Championships in Tampa , Florida for the first time in 2004 , where he immediately emerged as one of the strongest participants in the broad field of participants. In the end, he finally won the silver medal in individual jumping and the gold medal in synchronized jumping, making him the best Canadian participant in the men.

The young Canadian was able to continue his successful run in 2005 and won the gold medal in the individual jumping at the 1st Senior Team Trials in Calgary. Also in 2005 he achieved fourth place in the individual and synchronized competition at the Trampoline Canada Cup ; he also won a bronze medal in singles and a silver medal in synchronized at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Vancouver . In the remaining competitions in which Burnett participated this year, however, his performance fell sharply again. At the Trampoline World Cup in Levallois-Perret he was only able to record a sixth place in individual jumping and a 16th place in synchronized jumping. At the four-day World Championships 2005 in Eindhoven , the 1.65 m tall Canadian could not report any notable successes either. A tenth place in the team competition and a 14th place in the synchronized jumping was followed by a poor 74th place in the individual jumping.

2006 to 2007

Jason Burnett at the 2007 Trampoline Canada Cup

The Canadian trampoline gymnast was able to record by far greater success in the following year 2006; including numerous gold medals. At the Trampoline Canada Cup in Surrey he was able to celebrate his first gold medal this year, where he achieved first place in synchronized jumping and only slipped to twelfth place in individual jumping. This year he also took part for the first time at the Pacific Rim Championships , which this year was held for the last time under the name Pacific Alliance Championships . In the individual competition in Honolulu he achieved a bronze medal, followed by another bronze medal at the World Cup in Krasnodar, Russia in the same year. In Québec, in the Canadian province of the same name, Burnett won gold medals in individual and synchronized jumping at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships this year . He also won gold in the singles at the Pan American Championships in the Mexican city of Monterrey . In the same year Jason Burnett also took part in the oldest trampoline competition in the world, the Nissen Cup , named after George Nissen , which has been taking place in Savognin since 1958 , and achieved fifth place in individual and seventh place in synchronized. When Trampoline and Tumbling World Cup in Germany Salzgitter Burnett scratched in individual competition again short of a podium over and finished fourth; in the dubbing competition he only reached twelfth place. At the 2006 Canadian Classic in Red Deer , Alberta's third largest city after Calgary and Edmonton , the young Canadian showed his quality again. So it was enough in tumbling and synchronized jumping for first place and the associated gold medals.

In 2007 Jason Burnett took part in a number of World Cup series competitions; including in the USA, Canada, China, Russia and Poland. When the World Cup was held in Lake Placid, he achieved sixth place in synchronous and a silver medal in individual. On April 2, 2007, he set a new record at Lake Placid when he won on a difficulty of 17,500. He exceeded a more than 20-year record that was previously set in 1986 by the Soviet Igor Gelimbatovsky with a difficulty of 17,000. At the subsequent World Cup at home, he could not convince; a seventh place in synchron was only compared to a 40th place in individual jumping. In the subsequent World Cup in the Chinese city of Kunshan , he came to a similar conclusion; a still passable bronze medal in the synchronized competition was compared to a 43rd place in the individual. However, the performance increased again at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships held afterwards in Regina, SK , when Burnett won a gold medal in individual and a silver medal in synchronized jumping. Inspired by these successes, the Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro came second in the individual ranking. Burnett's success continued at the next stop of the World Cup series in the Russian metropolis of Saint Petersburg , winning a bronze medal in singles and a gold medal in synchronous. After a first place in the individual jumping and a second place in the synchronized jumping at the Trampoline Canada Cup in Hamilton, ON , the run of success decreased a bit. At the World Cup in Zielona Góra , Poland , it was only enough for a 34th place in the individual competition and a 13th place in the synchronous competition. Even at the 2007 home world championships in Québec, the young Canadian could not prevail against the strong competition. Only an eleventh place in individual jumping and a 24th place in synchronized jumping looked out. Also in 2007 Burnett took part in the test event before the 2008 Summer Olympics, in which he achieved a fifth place in individual.

Successful 2008

The most successful year of his career so far for Jason Burnett should be 2008, in which he started relatively weak with a 10th place in individual jumping and a 13th place in synchronized jumping at the World Cup in Wroclaw , Poland , but improved considerably afterwards. At the following event, Elite Canada in Kamloops , he was able to receive the gold medal in the individual; he also achieved this placement at the All Canada TR Olympic Trials , which were held in Terrebonne, QC . At the next stop of the World Cup series in Publier / Amphion-les-Bains, directly on Lake Geneva , Burnett achieved eighth place in the individual competition; in synchronized jumping he did not take part in any significant event this year due to his preparations for the Summer Olympics of the same year. At the Canadian Gymnastics Championships Burnett was finally able to record a gold medal in individual jumping again. At the subsequent Olympic tournament in trampoline gymnastics at the Olympic Games in Beijing on August 19, Burnett was able to score 40.7 points in individual jumping behind Chinese Lu Chunlong (with 41.00 points) and ahead of his compatriot Dong Dong (with 40.60 points ) win the silver medal. Inspired by the successes at the Olympics, he achieved a top placement at the World Cup in the Portuguese coastal town of Loulé and was able to win gold in the individual. The young Canadian was also able to prove his talent at the Pan American Championships , which were held in Buenos Aires this year , by winning two gold medals (in an individual and in a team) and finishing fourth in the synchronized competition .

2009 to 2010

The year 2009 should begin as successfully for Jason Burnett as the old year ended. Among other things, he was able to receive gold medals in individual jumping at Elite Canada in Kelowna and at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Hamilton, ON, and also achieved fourth place in the individual competition in the World Cup series in Bulgaria's capital Sofia . After that, the quality of the 2008 Olympic silver medalist decreased increasingly, with this year's Trampoline Canada Cup in the small town of Okotoks winning an individual silver medal, but already falling to sixth place in synchronism. After that, the Canadian took part in various World Cup series competitions, mainly in Europe, although he was not really convincing. A sixth place in the individual and a 13th place in the synchronous in Ostend , Belgium, followed a 15th place in the individual and a sixth place in the synchronous round in Zielona Góra, Poland. At the World Cup in Salzgitter, Burnett only competed in the individual competition, but did not get past eighth place. At the 2009 World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia, Burnett competed in four different competitions. He reached a 17th place in the individual, a fifth place in the synchronized, as well as ninth place in the team and an eleventh place in the synchronized team jumping.

2010 was again many times better for Jason Burnett than the previous year 2009. He started the new season with a gold medal in the individual competition in Elite Canada in Airdrie, AB . At the Cup of Flanders , a trampoline tournament in Flanders , he also reached two top 5 placements, with silver in the synchronized competition and a fifth place in the individual competition. At the Pacific Rim Championships 2010 in Melbourne , the Canadian was again able to celebrate great success; He achieved two first places in individual and synchronized jumping and was fourth in the team event. He also had good successes at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships , becoming first in the individual and fourth in synchronized jumping. At the World Cup in Davos , the actual Nissen Cup , Burnett was able to win a silver medal in singles and synchronized. At this event he was also able to beat his record set three years ago with a difficulty of 17,500, with a difficulty of 18,800.

2011 to 2012

Jason Burnett achieved a gold medal in 2011 in the individual competition at Jannie Jansen International in Pretoria . In the same year he was able to record only an 18th place at the Elite Canada event in Trois-Rivières and thus the worst personal placement he ever achieved in this competition after three wins. At the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Charlottetown in the province of Prince Edward Island only reached a 14th place in the individual, but could decide the synchronized competition for themselves. Some moderate placings followed on the World Cup series, including an eleventh place in the individual and a tenth place in the synchronous at the World Cup in Wuxi, China . In Kawasaki , Japan , there were no top placings either, only eighth place in the synchronized ranking and fourth place in the individual ranking looked out. Burnett was already in better shape back home at the Trampoline Canada Cup , where he received a gold (individual) as well as a silver medal (synchronous). He also had moderate success at the 2011 World Championships in Birmingham , where he only competed in the individual competition and finished twelfth.

He also took part in the Olympic Qualification Test Event in the run-up to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , where he finished fourth in the individual. As in the previous year, he was able to win the gold medal in the individual competition at the Pacific Rim Championships , this time in Everett, WA . Burnett couldn't really convince at Elite Canada of 2012 and only came in tenth. But again he achieved better results at the Olympic Trials in Gatineau , where he came first in the individual and repeated this performance at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Regina, where he also won gold in the individual. However, his performance in the World Cup series deteriorated quite a bit this year, mainly due to the preparation for the Olympic Games of the same year. He was the World Cup in Spanish Albacete recorded only a weak 49th place and also had the World Cup in Arosa with twelfth place only a moderately better placement. In qualifying for the trampoline gymnastics tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics , the Canadian was still sixth; he was unable to achieve this in the main competition that followed on August 3 at The O₂ , where he was eliminated as eighth of eight finalists. He had to stop his final exercise after the second jump because he had come too close to the edge of the trampoline.

2013 until today

In 2013 Jason Burnett only took part in a comparatively few international competitions, but all of his participations this year were crowned with success and brought in podium places. At Elite Canada he won gold in the individual jumping, he also succeeded in this at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa . It was enough for two individual silver medals at the Trampoline Canada Cup , as well as Burnett's only appearance this year outside of Canada at the World Cup in Loulé, Portugal .

Burnett was also able to record some successes in 2014, where he won the gold medal in singles at Elite Canada . He repeated this performance at the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa, where he won the gold medal not only in the individual but also in the Men's ON TR Team . In Richmond BC Burnett took part in the Pacific Rim Championships , in which he came to three top 10 finishes. At the tournament he came in eighth place in individual, fourth place in synchronized, and a second place in team competition.
