Five badminton competitions were held at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital Beijing .
Each National Olympic Committee could use up to three players or doubles pairing. 38 players were qualified for the individual competitions and 16 pairs for the double competitions .
A NOK got three places if all three players were placed in the top 4 of the BWF world rankings, two if two were in the top 16 and otherwise one place each until the 38 resp. 16 places were filled, and each continental association got one starting place per discipline for sure. One wild card in the men's singles and one in the women singles were "freely" available to the International Olympic Committee. So 86 men and 86 women, a total of 172 athletes, took part in the badminton competitions. In fact, there were 89 men and 95 women, a total of 184, although there were a few multiple starters. The main criterion for qualification was the world rankings of the Badminton World Federation from May 1, 2008.
50 NOK sent athletes to the tournament, compared to 33 at the 2004 Athens Games.
