Olympic Summer Games 2008 / Badminton (Qualification)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Before the 2008 Summer Olympics , numerous badminton qualification tournaments were held.

Qualification criteria

The main qualification criterion was the badminton world rankings as of May 1, 2008. 38 starters in each of the individual disciplines and 16 starters each in the double disciplines were automatically qualified:

  • Places 1–4, provided the NOC has not already occupied three starting places in the respective discipline.
  • Places 5–16, unless the NOC has already occupied two starting places in the respective discipline.
  • Places 17 until the maximum number of starters is reached, provided the NOC has not already occupied a starting place in the respective discipline.

Each continental federation was also guaranteed a starting place for the highest placed starter per discipline, unless the place was already secured by the world rankings. If there is no starter in the ranking, the last winner of the continental championships was given the right to start. The host was given at least two starting places. Two wildcards were allowed to be issued by the IOC Tripartite Commission.
