Marc Zwiebler (born March 13, 1984 in Bonn - Bad Godesberg ) is a German badminton player .

Private

Zwiebler is the son of the former badminton players Eva-Maria and Karl-Heinz Zwiebler . He grew up in Bonn - Beuel and has lived in Saarbrücken since 2004 to train at the Olympic base there. From 2008 he studied business administration , first at the HTW des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken, later in distance learning at the IUBH in Bad Honnef . After completing his studies, he co-founded a company for management consultancy in human resource management.

overview

In the men's singles, Zwiebler was temporarily the German number 1 and number 10 in the world rankings. In his career so far, he has been able to win the European Championship individually and with the mixed national team. In addition, there are nine German championships (record), one Grand Prix title , 14 titles in the European Badminton Europe Circuit competition series and one international title. In 2011 he reached the semi-finals at All England . At the European Championships in Karlskrona in 2012 he won gold with 21:15, 21:13 over local hero Henri Hurskainen . Two years earlier, he achieved bronze at the 2010 European Championships alongside Briton Rajiv Ouseph . In 2013 he was European team champion. With the round of 16 at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and participation in the finals at the Denmark Open 2009 , a tournament in the top-tier BWF World Superseries series , Zwiebler became Germany's most successful badminton player of all time.

Career and title in detail

Zwiebler comes from a badminton family: his parents Eva-Maria and Karl-Heinz Zwiebler were multiple German champions in singles and doubles. The Erwin-Kranz-Halle, home of the Bundesliga club 1. BC Beuel , is named after his maternal grandfather. At the age of six he started playing badminton at 1. BC Beuel. He was soon considered to be the greatest German talent: he was German youth and junior champion 19 times, in 2003 he was European youth champion and won his first international senior title. In his younger years, Zwiebler was also a very talented footballer in addition to the badminton sport . He played at SV Beuel 06 and was courted by 1. FC Köln when he was ten . But he decided entirely to play badminton.

In the spring of 2005 Zwiebler became German champion in the men's singles for the first time, beating Björn Joppien from Langenfeld, who has been triumphant every year since 2000, in three sets in the final . A few months later he was plagued by pain in his back, he thought of normal sore muscles until the pain had worsened drastically and shortly before Christmas 2005 he could no longer play. The diagnosis was a herniated disc . His career was in jeopardy and his dream of participating in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing was a long way off. After an operation at the end of 2006 and six months of rehabilitation and rehabilitation training with a total of one and a half years of abstinence, he started to catch up after the Olympic qualification. After the compulsory break he was no longer listed in the world rankings, but within eight months he fought his way to number 27 in the world rankings with six BE Circuit titles and thus enabled himself to participate in the Olympic Games. In early 2008 he was named "Comebacker of the Year" by WDR .

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Zwiebler beat Scott Evans from Ireland in the first round and Andrew Smith from England in the second round in three sets. He was the first German player to make it to the last sixteen, but then lost to Lee Hyun-il from South Korea in straight sets.

At the Denmark Open 2009 Zwiebler, who was unset himself, defeated Wong Choong Hann from Malaysia , who was seeded fourth, in the first round in three sets. This was followed by a victory over his unseed compatriot Muhammad Hafiz Hashim in three sets, before he clearly won in two sets in the round of 16 against Chen Long from China, who was eighth . In the semifinals he finally won over this year's World Cup third and vice world champion of 2007 Sony Dwi Kuncoro from Indonesia in three sets. In the final, however, his compatriot Simon Santoso was too strong for Zwiebler and he lost in two sets.

At the prestigious All England 2011 , Zwiebler defeated the reigning world champion Chen Jin from China in two sets in the round of 16 , but failed in the semifinals against Lin Dan from China in three sets against the Olympic champion in Beijing 2008 .

In July 2011 Zwiebler won the Canada Open and with it his first Grand Prix title, beating the 2004 Olympic champion in Athens and 2005 world champion Taufik Hidayat from Indonesia in two sets, whom he had already ten days earlier in the US quarter-finals Open could beat.

In 2012 he won the silver medal at the European team championship with the German men's national team. In the same year he celebrated his greatest success to date when he won the gold medal at the individual European championships in Karlskrona, Sweden, without losing a set.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Zwiebler defeated Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed from the Maldives and the Ukrainian champion Dmytro Zavadsky, who was in 209 position in the world at the time, in the group stage . With the defeat against the Chinese Chen Jin , he was eliminated in the round of 16, just like four years ago in Beijing.

In Ramenskoje , Russia , Zwiebler and the mixed national team won the 2013 European Team Championship with a 3-0 final victory over Denmark . After the German women's national team won gold for the first time in 2012, a German mixed selection became European team champions for the first time in the more than 40-year history of the tournament.

In June 2013 Zwiebler scored 9,350 points by reaching the finals at the Indonesia Open and thus the most world ranking points of his career. For comparison, winning the Olympic Games or winning the Individual World Championship brings 12,000 points for the world rankings . His won prize money amounted to 26,600 US dollars .

Between 2008 and 2013, Zwiebler was named “Player of the Year” in the election of the German Badminton Association and the specialist magazine “Badminton Sport”.

On November 3, 2017, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements .
