Suriname was represented at the Olympic Games for the 11th time bytaking part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . The first participation was in 1960. With Anthony Nesty, the flag bearer at the opening ceremony wasnot a current athlete, but the swimming legend of the country.

Although Nieuwendam only turned 17 on August 26, two days after the Olympic Games, she was not the youngest participant in Oracles. Chinyere Pigot, a swimmer, is even younger; only three months before the tournament, on May 1st, she was 15 years old.
