In 2008 Norway took part in the Summer Olympics forthe 23rd timein Beijing . 30 men and 54 women took part in 15 competitions. The flag bearer was Uganda-born weightlifter Ruth Kasirye , who later took seventh place in her weight class.

The two Olympic champions Andreas Thorkildsen and Olaf Tufte were able to defend their gold medal from 2004 and Else-Marthe Sørlie Lybekk, an athlete who had previously won an Olympic medal, also took part in the third gold medal .
