Bjarne Berntsen (born December 21, 1956 ) is a Norwegian football coach and former player. From 2005 to 2009 he coached the Norwegian women's national team with which he became vice European champion in 2005.

Career

As a player

Bjarne Berntsen began his football career with the small club Figgjo IL and went to the Norwegian 1st division club Viking FK in 1977 . He played for Viking FK until 1982, during which time he made 33 games for the Norwegian national football team , including the famous game against England in September 1981, which the team won. During his active career, he was mostly found in the position of right-back.

As a trainer

After his career as a player, he coached Figgjo, Bryne and Viking. In 1986 and 1987 he was assistant coach for the Norwegian national soccer team . Between 1999 and 2004 he was adm. Director for Viking Fotball ASA . In late summer 2004 he was unexpectedly appointed head coach for the Norwegian national soccer team. He took over the post on January 1, 2005.

The first tournament of the women's national football team with Berntsen as head coach took place at the 2005 European Women's Football Championship in England. Many problems arose from the nomination of 16-year-old Isabell Herlovsen , the daughter of a former colleague in the national team, to the squad for the European Football Championship - but she scored two decisive goals that kept Norway in the tournament. After a failed group stage, Norway played a memorable semi-final against Sweden, which they won 3-2 after extra time with a goal from Solveig Gulbrandsen. In the final against Germany, however, the team lost 3-1.

Berntsen led his team to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup in China, where they won their group by beating Canada, Ghana and Australia. In the quarter-finals, his team played against host China, in front of 50,000 spectators. Norway won 1-0, with a goal from Herlovsen. In the semifinals the team lost 3-0 to Germany and were also defeated 4-1 to the USA in the third place match. Due to their performance at the 2007 Women's World Cup, Norway qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Aside from Norway and Viking, Berntsen is a huge fan of English football and Liverpool.
