Norway took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and the equestrian competitions in the Swedish capital Stockholm with a delegation of 22 athletes, 19 men and three women, in 18 competitions in six sports.

It was Norway's thirteenth participation in the Summer Olympics .

The youngest athlete was sprinter Bjørn Nilsen at 19 years and 162 days , and the oldest athlete was shooter Hans Aasnæs (53 years and 350 days).

Flag bearer

The sailor Thor Thorvaldsen wore the flag of Norway at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium , the rider Birck Elgaaen wore it at the Equestrian Games in Stockholm.

Medals

With a won gold and two bronze medals the Norwegian team was ranked 22 in the medal count .
