Sweden took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 88 athletes (74 men and fourteen women) in 74 competitions in fourteen sports. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the fencer Per Carleson .

In addition, Sweden hosted the equestrian games that were held in Stockholm five months earlier . Nine (male) Swedish riders took part, who won gold medals in three competitions. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was Gösta Boltenstern .
