Bengt Johansson (wrestler)

Karl Bengt Johansson (born January 4, 1926 in Hallsberg , † April 9, 2008 in Arboga ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was world champion in 1950 in the Greco-Roman style flyweight.

Career

Bengt Johansson grew up in Hallsberg and began wrestling as a teenager in 1940 at the local "Brottning Klub" (wrestling club). In 1948 he moved to "Göteborgs Athletklub" because he had better development opportunities there. In 1949 he was used for the first time Swedish flyweight champion in Greco-Roman style and at the European Championship of the same year in Istanbul in free style. Among six participants, he won the bronze medal there by defeating the 1948 Olympic champion Lennart Viitala from Finland .

In Gothenburg Bengt was then intensively prepared for the World Cup, which took place in Stockholm in 1950 . The main part of the fact that Bengt in Stockholm with five wins and only two missing points world champion in Greco-Roman. The flyweight style was largely carried out by the Finnish coach of the Swedish national team Robert Oksa.

Also at the 1951 World Cup, which took place in Helsinki and was held in free style, Bengt won a medal, the bronze medal. A year later he was also at the Olympic Games held in the same city. He started in the Greco-Roman style with three wins on points, but lost in the fourth round against the Sicilian Ignazio Fabra and had to retire from the competition. Four years later, Bengt was again at the Olympic Games. In Melbourne he started again in the flyweight division, but retired after the second round because of defeats to Borivoje Vukov from Yugoslavia and Dumitru Pârvulescu from Romania .

He then ended his international wrestling career, but was still active at the national level for a few years. In 1962 he was the last Swedish champion in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight.
