Ali Yücel

Ali Yücel (* 1930 in Gürcü , Tokat ; † March 17, 1981 ) was a Turkish wrestler . He was world and European champion in free style in the flyweight .

Career

Ali Yücel started wrestling as a teenager. He developed into an excellent wrestler in both styles, who received the finishing touches in the Turkish national team from Nuri Boytorun. In 1949 his first start at an international championship, the European championship in Istanbul . Ali achieved four victories in Istanbul, including a. a. one about the 1948 Olympic champion Lennart Viitala from Finland . Winning the European Championship was the reward.

In 1950, Ali also started at the World Cup in Greco-Roman style in Stockholm . He proved that he has mastered this style too, because he became vice world champion. In the final battle he was defeated by the Swede Bengt Johansson just on points.

Ali then became world champion at the 1951 World Cup in Helsinki , which was again held in free style. Ali defeated his toughest rivals Bengt Johansson and Mahmoud Mollaghassemi from Iran safely on points.

Ali Yücel was not nominated for the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki after differences with the Turkish Wrestling Association. He then ended his wrestling career at the age of 21, which had actually only just begun.
