Maurice Mewis (born September 16, 1929 in Antwerp , † February 23, 2017 ) was a Belgian wrestler . He won a bronze medal at the 1953 Greco-Roman style flyweight championship .

Career

Maurice Mewis comes from Antwerp and started wrestling there as a teenager in 1945. The only 1.55 meter tall athlete competed in both styles, but preferred the Greco-Roman style, which is surprising, because in Belgium in his time mainly the free style was cultivated. He always started in flyweight (back then up to 52 kg body weight). His brother Joseph Mewis , who is a year and a half younger than him, was also an excellent wrestler, who even won the silver medal in featherweight free style at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

Maurice Mewis made his first start at an international championship at the 1950 World Cup in Stockholm . In the Greco-Roman style, he took a good 6th place with a victory over the strong Italian Giovanni Cocco . He was even more successful at the 1951 World Cup in Helsinki , which was held in free style. He created a small sensation there in his first fight when he defeated the high favorite and Olympic champion of 1948 Lennart Viitala in front of the Finnish audience . In the next few fights he lost against Mahmoud Mollaghassemi from Iran and against Ali Yücel from Turkey , but took an excellent 4th place.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , Maurice Mewis started again in the Greco-Roman style.
