Mahmoud Mollaghassemi ( Persian محمود ملاقاسمی; * May 4, 1929 ) is a former Iranian wrestler . He was a bronze medalist at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in free style flyweight.

Career

Mahmoud Mollaghassemi was one of the very first Iranian wrestlers to become one of the world's top free-style wrestlers. In 1950 he started at the World Flyweight Championships in Stockholm in the for him unfamiliar Greco-Roman style, won two fights, but retired because of a loss to Borivoje Vukov from Yugoslavia in the third round and finished in 7th place. A year later he was able to compete in Helsinki in the usual free style and won the silver medal with three wins and one defeat against Ali Yücel from Turkey .

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, Mahmoud showed excellent fights in free style in flyweight again. The three medalists Hasan Gemici from Turkey, Yūshū Kitano from Japan and Mahmoud Mollaghassemi defeated each other, with Mahmoud winning against Gemici on points. In the end, Gemici and Kitano had five missing points and Mahmoud six missing points. Since Gemici had won against Kitano, who in turn had defeated Mahmoud, Gemici won the gold, Kitano the silver and Mahmoud Mollaghassemi the bronze.

Mahmoud Mollaghassemi completed his successful career with a 5th place at the 1954 World Championships in Tokyo in free style in flyweight.

Mahmoud Mollaghassemi was also known in the Federal Republic of Germany , because after the Olympic Games in 1952 he stayed with the Iranian national relay for a friendship fight against a West German selection in Essen . After 7 minutes he was the shoulder winner over Rolf Schreer from ASV Heros Dortmund .
