from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yūshū Kitano ( Japanese 北野 祐 秀 , Kitano Yūshū ; born April 14, 1930 in Osaka Prefecture ; † February 27, 2016 in Nishinomiya ) was a Japanese wrestler . He won a silver free style flyweight medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 .

Career

Yushu Kitano took part in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in freestyle wrestling. He was wrestling in the flyweight, the weight class that had its weight limit at 52 kg. Until then, Kitano was completely unknown in the international wrestling camp. He had never participated in an international championship. Nevertheless, he performed very confidently in Helsinki, where he defeated Rolf Johansson from Sweden , Mohamed El Ward , Egypt , Carlos Davila from Mexico , Louis Baise from South Africa and Mahmoud Mollaghassemi from Iran . He lost on points against Hasan Gemici from Turkey . Determining the Olympic champion was not that easy because Kitano, Gemici and Mollaghassemi had beaten each other. At the end of the tournament, Kitano and Gemici each had five missing points, but Mollaghassemi had six. Since Gemici had defeated Kitano, he became Olympic champion , Kitano received the silver medal and Mollaghassemi the bronze medal .

Yushu Kitano started in 1954 at the Asian Games in Manila and came there in bantamweight behind the Pakistani Mohammad Din on the 2nd place. At the world championships taking place in Tokyo in the same year , he again took part in the flyweight division. He came there to victories over Mirian Zalkalamanidze from the USSR and Basilio Pabila from the Philippines . But he just lost the decisive fight for the world title against Hüseyin Akbaş from Turkey .

In other international championships Yushu Kitano no longer took part.
