Heiko Mathias Förster (* 1966 in Crivitz near Schwerin ) is a German conductor . Since 2014 he has been chief conductor of the Ostrava- based Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra .

Life

Förster took piano lessons at the age of four and was a student at the Schwerin Conservatory at the age of six and was a winner of national piano competitions in 1976. He was fascinated by the theatrical atmosphere, changed his field of study and devoted himself to conducting. Before completing his studies, Förster was appointed first conductor and then, at the age of only 23, chief conductor of the Brandenburg Theater. In 1993 he was appointed general music director of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . During its nine seasons, Heiko Mathias Förster conducted around 500 concerts at the Brandenburg Theater and a total of 32 opera and operetta premieres. He went on numerous national and international concert tours with the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra , which took him to Japan and South Africa.

In 1999 Förster followed a call to Munich and took over the post of chief conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra , which he held until the end of the 2005/2006 season. In addition to his work as chief conductor of the Munich ensemble, Heiko Mathias Förster established himself as an opera conductor with his opera conductors at the International Music Festival in Chiemgau. Heiko Mathias Förster crowned his seven years of work in Munich with a highly acclaimed series of performances of all Beethoven symphonies in the Prinzregententheater .

Further, partly international engagements also led to joint aria evenings with interpreters such as José Cura , Angela Gheorghiu and Rolando Villazón . In the 2004/2005 season Heiko Mathias Förster accompanied the tenor Joseph Calleja on his Munich debut. In spring 2007 Heiko Mathias Förster conducted the Munich Symphony Orchestra on the mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča's first tour of Germany .

At the beginning of the 2007/2008 season, Heiko Mathias Förster took over the musical direction of the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen as general music director and also directed concerts by the orchestra in Zurich , Basel , Munich and Cologne . He also earned a lot of praise for conducting La Bohème at the Musiktheater im Revier .
