Arboga (German outdated: Arbogen ) is a city in the Swedish province of Västmanland County and the historic province of Västmanland . It is the capital of the Arboga municipality and in 2015 had almost 11,000 inhabitants. The name of the place is first recorded as Arbugæ in 1286 and contains an old Swedish name for the bend in the river on which the city is located.

An unusually strong type of beer has been brewed in Arboga since the Middle Ages . The brewery can still be found today as a museum in the city center. The beer type Arbogaöl is sold today by a larger beer producer.

history

The place received city rights in the 13th century, but there was a settlement here long before that. In 1435 a meeting of the Swedish professional groups took place in Arboga , which today is generally regarded as the first Swedish diet . At this meeting, the miner Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was elected Rikshövitsman , which was the military equivalent of the imperial administrator .

In 1561 King Erik XIV had another meeting of the Estates held in Arboga. He dictated the so-called "Articles of Arboga", in which the power of the princes was restricted in his favor.

In 1710 Arboga was the Swedish capital for half a year. The plague raged in Stockholm that year and it was decided to move many offices and the royal senate to Arboga. Before the officials could start their work, the royal ships had to be in quarantine for an extended period in port .

traffic

Today the city is a traffic junction, as the European roads 18 and 20 meet here. Trains on the Stockholm – Örebro line , which runs from Stockholm to Hallsberg , also stop in Arboga . To the southeast of the city is the Arboga airfield with the Arboga robot museum for military guided missiles.
