Viking Palm (born October 23, 1923 in Östra Broby , Skane , † January 15, 2009 ) was a Swedish wrestler .

Career

Viking Palm grew up in Broby, Sweden . He started wrestling at the age of 17 and started for "Östra" Broby. He later moved to Brottning Klub (BK) Eslöv . Viking was a late starter because it wasn't until he was 25 that he had grown into the top Swedish ranks. In 1949 he became the first Swedish champion in freestyle wrestling, the style he preferred. In the same year he was also accepted into the Swedish national team of wrestlers. The trainers Robert Oksa and Rudolf Svedberg then led him relatively quickly into the world's elite. At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he beat the entire assembled world elite in the light heavyweight division and became Olympic champion . The difficulties that Palm had with Turkish wrestlers run like a thread through his career. Adil Candemir , Yaşar Doğu , Adil Atan and Ismet Atli defeated him at important international championships at that time. Only in 1952 did he win against Adil Atan.

Viking Palm was a firefighter, but worked after his time as an active wrestler but also as a trainer and was u. a. active in New Zealand and Iran .
