Macharbek Chadarzew

Macharbek Chasbijewitsch Chadarzew ( Russian Махарбек Хазбиевич Хадарцев ; born October 2, 1964 in Suadag , North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a former Ossetian wrestler who competed for the Soviet Union , the Commonwealth of Independent States , Russia and Uzbekistan .

Career

Macharbek Chadarzew grew up in Suadag. As a teenager, he started wrestling and took his older brother Aslan by bus to training in Vladikavkaz, 40 kilometers away, four to five times a week . He became a member of SKA Vladikavkas and a student of the coach Kazbek Dedikajew. He wrestled exclusively in free style and started as an 18-year-old in 1982 for the first time in an international championship, namely the Junior World Championships in Colorado Springs . There he became junior world champion in the weight class up to 81 kg body weight. In 1983 and 1984 he then won further world titles in the junior division. In 1986 he was the first Soviet light heavyweight champion and was used for the first time in the seniors at an international championship, namely the World Cup in Budapest . He fully fulfilled the expectations placed on him and won his first senior world title by winning the final battle over Torsten Wagner from the GDR .

In 1987 he became European champion in Veliko Tarnowo and world champion in Clermont-Ferrand . In Veliko Tarnovo he was lucky that the judges overlooked Chadarzew's shoulder defeat in the fight against Bodo Lukowski from Germany . They probably overlooked it because they didn't think it was possible. At the World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, he won the title by winning the final without a fight because the American James Scherr could no longer compete against him due to an injury.

In 1988, Chadarzew won two titles. In spring he was European champion in Manchester and in autumn in Seoul also Olympic champion in the light heavyweight division, where he had little problems winning the gold medal in front of two Asian wrestlers.

In 1989 and 1990, Chadarzew was only at the World Championships and won his third and fourth world titles. In 1989 he won against James Scherr in the final, against which he had to fight this time, in the final with 3-0 points and in 1990 he defeated another American with 1-0 on points in the final with Chris Campbell.

In 1991 and 1992, Chadarzew again celebrated four successes. He became European champion in both years, world champion in 1991 and Olympic champion for the second time in Barcelona in 1992 , both in the light heavyweight division. At the European Championships in 1991 in Stuttgart , he was vastly superior to his competitors and won the title without having to give up a point. At the World Cup of the same year, however, he needed outside help to win the title, as he had surprisingly lost to Chris Campbell. Campbell then lost to the Cuban Roberto Limontas and had to retire early. To win the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona, Chadarzew needed five wins and achieved a points ratio of 25: 2 in his favor. This time he dealt with Chris Campbell with 7-0 points.

After his second Olympic victory in 1992, Chadarzew continued his career. But he soon realized that the competition wouldn't make it easy for him. He won only one title at the following seven international championships that he still contested, that of the 1995 European champion in Friborg , Switzerland . It was especially the Iranian wrestler Rasul Khadem Azghali who defeated him several times and sent him off. So he was defeated by this wrestler in the finals of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and thus “only” won the silver medal.

After these Olympic Games, Macharbek Chadarzew ended his extremely successful career as an active wrestler, but dared to make a comeback at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 at the age of 35, this time starting for Uzbekistan , where he only achieved 14th place , since he was defeated by the Korean Yang Myung-Mo with 2: 3 points in the first round of the middleweight division, in which he had trained.

Macharbek Chadarzew now works as the general manager of a North Ossetian brewing group and is a member of the parliament of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania . Macharbek was also well known in the Federal Republic of Germany , because he also wrestled for ASV Lampertheim in the Ringer Bundesliga for some time . In September 2005 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
