Strike Fleet is a computer game of the genre strategy simulation game from 1987 by Electronic Arts , which was published by LucasArts for the Commodore 64 , Amiga , Apple II , Atari ST and MS-DOS .
Game content
The game comprises ten missions, some of which can also be played as a campaign. The missions can be completed individually in a freely chosen order or according to the specifications of the program.
At the beginning of every mission you have to assemble your fleet. The choice of ships is particularly limited for the two missions with ships of the Royal Navy . But even with the missions with the US Navy , not all American ship classes in the game are always available. Different ships can be selected in each ship class . The ship names correspond to those actually available in the respective navy. When putting together your own association, all possible dangers must be considered. The player has the task of setting courses, clearing up dangers and reacting appropriately. To win the game, all of the mission objectives must be met.
The missions
Strong realities
In this mission you are only responsible for the American frigate USS Stark . The mission is timed during the First Gulf War and tries to recreate the situation in the Persian Gulf on May 17, 1987, when Iraqi fighter jets attacked the frigate. It is the player's task to defend all neutral ships and himself against attacks. Since this mission is not offensive, you have to wait for an attack.
The Enemy Below
This mission can be assigned to the Falklands War . The player commands two British frigates that are supposed to protect their own forces near Port Stanley in East Falkland as part of an anti-submarine mission . The association was attacked unsuccessfully on May 1, 1982 by the Argentine submarine San Luis, a boat of the German type 209/1200 . The player's task is to find and sink the operating Argentine submarines. The on- board helicopters are very useful for the latter .
The Road to Kuwait
This is the second mission to be assigned to the First Gulf War. This time, again as the American commander , you lead a somewhat stronger unit. The task is to escort three flagged Kuwaiti tankers from the Persian Gulf. Attacks from airplanes and surface units must be expected. Especially in the Iran bordering the Strait of Hormuz threatening danger. After passing the Strait of Hormuz, the tankers are released into the safe Arabian Sea .
Falklands Defense
Back to the Falkland Islands. The player takes over a British two-ship association again. The historical background is the Argentine air raid, which led to the sinking of the British destroyer HMS Sheffield . It is the player's task with his association to take out three Argentine frigates that are supporting the Argentine main association. This is the last British mission.
Dire Straits
Again, one turns to the Persian Gulf. After you have led out tankers, some have to be led in. In addition to the narrowness of the Strait of Hormuz, attacks by speedboats and land-based surface-to-surface missiles must be expected. Air strikes cannot be ruled out either. The general conditions are different this time. The mission has a more offensive character, so you no longer have to wait for an attack.
Atlantic Cork
The Third World War has broken out. The enemy is now the Soviet Navy . A Soviet surface force and several submarines attempt to break out into the open Atlantic between Greenland , Iceland and Scotland . There, they pose a great danger to shipping traffic between the European and North American NATO -Staaten is two. P3-Orion - maritime patrol aircraft operating from Iceland in support of the task force of the player. To the northeast of the launch position, satellites have captured a large surface formation. The stationary sonar reconnaissance system SOSUS confirms the presence of Soviet attack submarines of various classes in the operational area. In addition, satellites were able to take pictures of Soviet backfire bombers being loaded with AS-6 Kingfish air-to-surface missiles.
Surprise invasion
The second mission of the Third World War also takes place in the waters of the Northern European Sea . This time, however, further north on the coast of Norway . A Soviet invasion fleet is approaching Trondheim . The player's small task force is the only thing that can be used to ward off the landing. A Soviet surface combat unit stands between the player's unit and the landing craft . It is also likely that submarines and bombers will intervene in the action.
Escape to New York
In the third mission as part of the Third World War, the player and his association are supposed to call at the North American east coast from Europe. In particular, the Soviet submarines operating in the Atlantic pose a problem. But the surface units and bombers should not be underestimated either.
Wolfpack
In the fourth mission of the Third World War, the player and his task force must provide escort . Ships that bring reinforcements for the American base to Iceland are escorted. To do this, the ships have to be brought within a few miles of the coast of Iceland. To the west of the launch position, satellites have already picked up a large Soviet surface force.
Mopping Up
The last mission. The end of the war is in sight and victory is assured if the Soviet Navy is prevented from getting its surviving units back to their northern ports. This is a pure search and destroy mission.
