history
The settlement was founded in 1843 and has been the capital since 1845. It was named after Lord Stanley , the "Secretary of State for War and the Colonies" of England. At the time of the British Empire , the place was an important supply station for the British Navy . As a deep-sea port, Stanley took on the repair of ships, became a base for whalers and seal hunters, and supplied the ships with coal. Landslides, triggered by intensive peat extraction , led to severe damage to the village in 1879 and 1886. In 1914 the British warships that destroyed the German East Asia Squadron in the sea battle near the Falkland Islands anchored here .
In 1979 Port Stanley Airport opened. Argentina occupied the city during the Falklands War in 1982 . It suffered destruction in the process before British troops recaptured it. The land around Stanley is still partially mined today.
The city was renamed "Puerto Argentino" by the then Argentine occupying power in 1982 (decree 757/82 of the Argentine military government of April 23, 1982). This name is still used in Argentina today.
