Yang Hyun-mo (born March 23, 1971 ) is a South Korean wrestler . He won a silver medal in free style middleweight at the 1996 Olympics .
Career
Yang Hyun-mo began wrestling as a teenager in 1984, focusing on free style. He belonged to the sports club Te Gong Sil Up Seoul and was mainly trained by You In-tak. The stocky, sturdy athlete was middleweight at a height of 1.74 meters, in the weight class up to 82 or 85 kg body weight.
He made his first start in an international championship at the age of 22. He took part in the Asian Championships in Ulan Bator and won a bronze medal there behind Amir Reza Khandem Azghadi from Iran and Bayan Monchiin Gantogtoch , Mongolia. At the Asian Games in Hiroshima in 1994 and at the 1995 Asian Championships in Manila, he just missed the medal ranks with a 4th and a 5th place. In 1985 he started in Atlanta for the first time in a world championship, but only came 17th there.
In 1996, Yang Hyun-mo took 2nd place at the Asian Championships in Xiaoshan / China behind Ruslan Kinchagow from Uzbekistan, but ahead of the strong Iranian Alireza Heidari. The Olympic Games in Atlanta became the highlight of his career. He won there over Hidekazu Yokoyama, Japan, Laszlo Dvorak, Hungary and the ex-world champion Elmadi Jabrailow , Kazakhstan, whom he held down with 3: 2 points and was in the final against Chadschimurad Magomedow from Russia. He delivered this an open fight, which he just lost with 1: 2 points. He won the Olympic silver medal with it.
In 1997 he came in at the East Asia Games in Pusan behind Elmadi Jabrailow on the 2nd place. At the 1998 World Cup in Tehran, Yang Hyun-mo came in 8th place. He defeated Ali Özen from Turkey and, Sergei Borchenko, Belarus, then lost to Alireza Heidari , defeated Rasul Katinowasow , Uzbekistan and lost to Leslie Gutches from the United States. How well he struggled can be seen from the fact that the two defeats he suffered in the process were extremely close. Against Heidari, who later became world champion, he lost after 8.00 minutes of fighting time with 0: 1 points and against Gutches after 8.00 minutes of fighting time with an even score of 1: 1 by a referee's decision.
He was also in good shape at the 1999 World Cup in Ankara and won victories over Vincent Aka Akesse , France, Michael Michaelidis, Cyprus and Mahmed Aghajew, Armenia. His fourth fight he lost against Chadschimurad Magomedow from Russia, which resulted in his departure. In the end, he finished 8th again. His last championship he played was the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He met there in his first fight against the Russian double Olympic champion and multiple world champion Macharbek Chadarzew , who, after a break from competition of several years, started his fourth Olympic Games for Uzbekistan. Yang Hyun-mo destroyed his hopes for another Olympic medal, because he defeated Chadarzew with 3: 2 points. He then also won over Ali Özen, Turkey, but then lost to Adam Saitijew , Russia and Charles Burton from the United States and finished 6th.
