Sweden took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with a delegation of 134 athletes (115 men and 19 women) in 100 competitions in 15 sports. The standard bearer at the opening ceremony was the pentathlete William Grut . The most successful athlete in Sweden with two medals was the kayak canoeist Gert Fredriksson , he won bronze over 1000 meters and, in two with Sven-Olov Sjödelius , gold over the same distance. John Ljunggren won silverin walking over 50 kilometers and freestyle swimmer Jane Cederqvist over 400 meters. At the age of 15, she was also the youngest athlete in her country. In addition, the wrestlers Gustav Freij and Hans Antonsson won bronze.
