France took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome with a delegation of 238 athletes (210 men and 28 women) in 120 competitions in 19 sports. These games were not very successful for the nation, only two silver and three bronze medals could be won, which put them in 25th place in the medal table. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the fencer Christian d'Oriola .
