Maurice Jacquel

Maurice Jaquel (born March 14, 1929 in Plainfaing , Vosges , † April 10, 2004 in Colmar ) was a French wrestler . He won a bronze medal in free style light heavyweight at the 1959 World Championships .

Career

Maurice Jaquel, who started wrestling as a teenager, belonged to a wrestling club in Colmar. The 1.84 m tall athlete developed into a very athletic type who primarily drew on his strength during his wrestling career. He wrestled in both styles, Greco-Roman and free style and throughout his career in light heavyweight or after a reform of the weight division by the international wrestling federation (FILA) from 1963 in the middleweight division.

At the French championships he won in 1952 in Greco-Roman. Style his first medal with 3rd place in the light heavyweight division. But it was not until 1957 that he was the first French champion in the senior class. But that year he won the titles in both styles. By the end of his career in 1966 he had won a total of 15 French championship titles.

Maurice Jaquel's international career began with an 8th place at the 1957 Free Style World Cup in Istanbul . In 1958 he came to the World Cup in Greco-Roman. Stil in Budapest with two wins and two defeats on a good 6th place. He was subject to u. a. also the later world champion Rostom Abashidze from the USSR .

The greatest success of his international career he achieved at the 1959 World Cup in free style in Tehran . He won there over Kanjio Shigeoka from Japan and fought against Dieter Rauchbach from Halle (Saale) in a draw. He suffered defeats from Gholamreza Takhti from Iran , Boris Kulajew from the USSR and Petko Sirakow from Bulgaria . But he was lucky that he had bye in the fourth round and Kulayev was eliminated in this round. As a result, he finished third behind Takhti and Sirakow and won a bronze medal .

In 1960 Maurice Jaquel competed in both styles at the Olympic Games in Rome . In Greco-Roman Style he celebrated a remarkable victory over Gheorghe Popovici from Romania , but lost to Eugen Wiesberger from Austria and Krali Bimbalow from Bulgaria and came in 10th place. In free style, he lost to Hermanus Van Zyl from South Africa and Daniel Brand from the United States, finishing in 15th place.

After these Olympic Games, he only started at the 1963 World Cup in Helsingborg . He wrestled in Greco-Roman. Middleweight style against Siegfried Neufang from the GDR and against Franz Pötsch from Austria tied and lost to Gheorghe Popovici. Due to this defeat he was eliminated and came in 15th place.

In 1960, 1962 and 1964 Maurice Jaquel was also in French teams that fought for the international matches against the Federal Republic of Germany . He lost twice to Horst Hess from Dortmund and once each to Ernst Ganssert from Frankfurt am Main and Johann Sterr from Munich on points.
