Krali Bimbalow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Krali Petiew Bimbalow (born November 1, 1934 , † in the 20th century) was a Bulgarian wrestler . He was at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in Greco-Roman style winner of the silver medal in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Krali Bimbalow started wrestling at the age of 18. He was one of the wrestlers who dealt exclusively with the Greco-Roman style in the development phase of Bulgarian wrestling after 1945. That was a peculiarity, because most Bulgarian wrestlers in those years wrestled in free style, which was due to the fact that many came from the Turkish minority in Bulgaria and came from oil wrestling . Krali Bimbalow was a physically unusually strong, stocky wrestler with a height of only 1.78 m.

In 1960, Krali Bimbalow qualified in Bulgaria for the start at the Olympic Games in Rome . He started there in the light heavyweight division. He came to four point wins and wrestled with the Turkish Tevfik Kış . Kış also won four times on points. At the end of the 5th round, Kış and Bimbalow each had four point wins and one draw and 6 missing points each. But Tewfik Kis was declared the Olympic champion , while Krali Bimbalow had to be satisfied with the silver medal . From today's perspective, this is no longer understandable.

At the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama , Krali Bimbalow could not start because Bulgaria did not take part in this World Cup because of the high costs involved. But he started at the 1962 World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) . As a result of a new division of the weight classes made by the international wrestling federation (FILA), he was now middleweight with a body weight of 87 kg. In Toledo he won over the Americans Russel Camilleri and Gheorghe Popovici from Romania and fought against Stig Persson from Sweden , Anatoli Kirow from the Soviet Union and Tevfik Kış. These results put him in 2nd place.

At the 1963 World Cup in Helsingborg , Krali Bimbalow was not so successful. Because after winning two fights he lost to György Gurics from Hungary and Nikolai Tschutschalow from the USSR and finished in 7th place in the middleweight division.

The last time Krali Bimbalow started in 1964 at an international championship. That was the Olympic Games in Tokyo . He came here in the middleweight division to two victories, but reached against Yavuz Selekman from Turkey and Géza Hollósi from Hungary only a draw and lost to Lothar Metz from the German team and finished in 6th place.

In 1965, Krali Bimbalow was replaced by Petar Krumow in Bulgaria . His hometown of Burgas posthumously awarded him honorary citizenship in 2000.
