Career
Johann Sterr started wrestling as a boy in Neuaubing. In 1951 he was second in the German youth championship in Lampertheim in the free style in the class up to 70 kg body weight. As a 20-year-old newcomer at the German championships in 1953, he caused a sensation among the active players when he became German middleweight champion, freestyle, when he first took part in a DM. This championship was followed by a few more in his long career, which lasted until 1964. Even at international championships, he always looked good, even if he never made it into the medal ranks. Sterr caused a stir among ring sports fans with his victories in the fights for the German team championship (DMM) with his ESV Sportfreunde Neuaubing . As a middleweight he always wrestled in the heavyweight division and won almost all of his fights there. He was also able to defeat the German heavyweight champion Willi Liebern , Dortmund . In 1958, 1961, 1962 and 1965 he and his team won the DMM.
In 1956 Sterr represented the all-German team at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he performed outstandingly with a 4th and a 5th place. In 1960 he was no longer able to qualify for the Olympics. He came in second behind Georg Utz from Kornwestheim and in front of Lothar Lippa from Halle - Leuna .
After finishing his active career, Johann Sterr worked as a trainer in South Africa for several years . After returning to Munich, he ran an inn in his hometown and overcame a serious illness.
