France took part in the VIII Winter Olympics in 1960 in the US Squaw Valley Ski Resort with a delegation of 26 athletes in six disciplines, including 18 men and 8 women. Jean Vuarnet became Olympic champion in the men's downhill and secured France the only gold medal at these games. Guy Périllat won two more bronze medals, also in the downhill, and Charles Bozon in the slalom. France placed tenth in the medal table.

The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the skier Benoît Carrara .
