Gilbert Mercier took part as a cross-country skier at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1954 in Falun and took sixth place with the relay. Four years later he won 61st place over 15 km at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti .

At the Winter Olympics in 1960 of Squaw Valley , he took part in the first Olympic biathlon race. With one hour and 29: 16.6 minutes, he ran the seventh best cross-country time. Due to his 17 shooting errors - Mercier only hit three of his 20 shots - he received 34 penalty minutes and was the 27th of the 30 starters at the end. At the Biathlon World Cup in 1963 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he came in 29th place. Two years later a 42nd place was added in Elverum . In 1966 he was not only 33rd of the individual in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , but also seventh with Louis Romand , Daniel Claudon and Paul Romand in the first officially held relay race. The last biathlon world championships were the world title fights in 1967 in Altenberg , where Mercier was 42nd of the individual.
