France took part in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow with a delegation of 121 athletes (98 men and 23 women) in 85 competitions in 13 sports.

The French athletes won six gold, five silver and three bronze medals. Olympic champions were the judoka Thierry Rey in the super light weight and Angelo Parisi in the heavyweight division, as well as the fencers Pascale Trinquet in the individual women's foil, Isabelle Boéri-Bégard , Véronique Brouquier , Brigitte Latrille-Gaudin , Christine Muzio and Pascale Trinquet in the team competition with the sword, Philippe Boisse , Hubert Gardas , Patrick Picot , Philippe Riboud and Michel Salesse in the team competition with the sword and Philippe Bonnin , Bruno Boscherie , Didier Flament , Pascal Jolyot and Frédéric Pietruszka in the team competition with the foil.
