Philippe Riboud (born April 9, 1957 in Lyon ) is a former French sword fencer . He won six medals in the Olympics.

Life

Riboud won the Frankenland tournament in 1974 , a men's epee world cup for juniors, and already took part in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in the epee competitions, but was eliminated there with the team in the round of 16, in the individual he finished 37th the 1978 World Cup , Riboud reached second place behind the 1976 Olympic champion Alexander Pusch . It was noteworthy that Riboud would have become world champion after the original results, but his won battle against the Pole Piotr Jablkowski was considered lost. The reason for this was a protest by the German and Polish delegations, as at the time of Riboud's winning goal the fighting time might have already expired. In the subsequent decision-making round for the title, Pusch prevailed. The following year Riboud won his first world title before the Hungarian Ernő Kolczonay .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Riboud won the final against Kolczonay, but lost to Swedes Rolf Edling and Johan Harmenberg , and in the end Harmenberg won gold ahead of Kolczonay and Riboud. With the French epee team, Riboud won the final against the Poles and received his first Olympic gold medal. After France remained without a medal at the 1981 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand, the French were more successful the following year at the 1982 World Cup in Rome. Riboud won silver in the individual competition behind the Hungarian Jenő Pap , in the team competition Olivier Lenglet , Philippe Riboud, Philippe Boisse and Michel Salesse won in front of the Swiss team. At the 1983 World Cup , Boisse, Lenglet, Salesse defended the title together with Jean-Michel Henry , but without Riboud. A year later at the 1984 Olympic Games , all five competed in the French team, which won silver behind the German team after Boisse gold and Riboud had won bronze in the individual competition.

At the world championships in 1985 and 1986 , the French epee team did not receive a medal, Riboud won bronze in individual singles in 1985 and his second world title in 1986. In 1987 , the French remained in the individual competition without a medal, but received bronze in the team competition for Boisse, Henry, Riboud and Éric Srecki . At the Olympic Games in 1988 Riboud was the best Frenchman in the individual competition, in the final he was defeated by the German Arnd Schmitt with 9 to 10 goals. In the final of the team competition, the French defeated the German team, with Riboud being the only one to lose his battles.

Philippe Riboud won his last major medal at the 1990 World Cup in Lyon, the city of his birth, while the French team with Henry, Lenglet, Riboud and Srecki received the silver medal behind the Italians.
