Bernard Jules Robert Schmetz (born March 21, 1904 in Orléans , † June 11, 1966 in Paris ) was a French sword fencer .

Bernard Schmetz was in 1937 in Paris in singles and 1938 in Piestany with the team champion . He also won in 1931 in Vienna in the World Championship in the individual and in 1931 in Vienna, in 1933 in Budapest and 1937 in Paris in the team competition. There are also bronze medals, which he won individually in 1933 in Budapest and 1938 in Piešťany, and a bronze medal with the team in Liège in 1930 . Schmetz took part in the Olympic Games three times : In 1928 he reached the final round with the team in Amsterdam , in which they only had to admit defeat to Italy . Together with Gaston Amson , René Barbier , Georges Buchard , Émile Cornic and Armand Massard , he won the silver medal. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he moved with the French team again into the final round, which this time they finished in first place ahead of Italy. In addition to Schmetz, Georges Buchard, Philippe Cattiau , Jean Piot , Fernand Jourdant and Georges Tainturier became Olympic champions . Schmetz finished fifth in the individual competition. In 1936 he qualified for the third time in a row with the team for the final round, in which they were defeated by Italy and Sweden, but prevailed against Germany in the battle for third place. Schmetz received bronze medals with Georges Buchard, Philippe Cattiau, Henri Dulieux , Michel Pécheux and Paul Wormser . From 1930 to 1932 he was French champion with the sword three times in a row.

Schmetz was deputy chairman of the French fencing association after his active career.
