Hans Jacobson won the team silver medal at the pentathlon world championships in 1967 in Jönköping together with Björn Ferm and Hans-Gunnar Liljenwall . Again with Ferm and Liljenwall, he was third in the team classification at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City . The bronze medal they had won was revoked soon after, because Liljenwall was the first athlete ever to be caught in a doping test carried out by the IOC . He had been doped with 0.81 per mille of alcohol .

After that, Jacobson switched to epee fencing from the modern pentathlon and won bronze with the team at the World Championships in Havana in 1969, and also in Vienna in 1971 . In 1973 he won silver at the world championships in Gothenburg behind his compatriot Rolf Edling . In 1974 and 1975 he was team world champion, always ahead of the German team.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he won gold with the team from the German team, which had dominated the individual standings. It is so far the only gold medal for Sweden in this discipline.

In 1977 he was again team world champion . In 1978 in Hamburg he achieved bronze both individually and with the Degen team. In 1980 he took part again in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow and finished fifth with the team.
